Mildred Smith
Historical Essay Contest
This Year’s Subject:
“Identify an individual who had an influence in shaping Smithtown’s history during the span between 1900 and 2000. Explain how and why this individual was important and detail his or her impact on the town.”
- The author of the winning essay will be awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship.
- Contest is open to any current High School Junior attending any of the eligible schools.
- Contest runs from January 2009 until June 2009. Final entries are due June 15th, 2009 by 5 PM in the Smithtown Historical Society office.
- The winner will be awarded the scholarship at the Society s Heritage Ball on October 22nd, 2009.
Rules and Guidlines:
- Student must be a high school junior during the 2008-2009 school year
- Student must attend one of the following schools: Commack High School, Hauppauge High School, Kings Park High School, The Knox School, Smithtown Christian School, Smithtown High School East, and Smithtown High School West
- Papers must be 8 - 10 pages in length, typed, doubled-spaced, using Times New Roman size 12 font
- Papers must address subject and make use of historical research
- Essays must select an individual and address why that individual was selected
- Research must include at least 3 different sources; only one source may be web-based
- Papers will be judged on 4 criteria: quality of writing, quality of historical research, quality of argument, creativity
- Judging will be completed by a panel selected by the Historical Society
- All judges’ decisions are final
- All entries MUST be received by June 15, 2009 at 5PM
- Entries may be mailed to 239 Middle Country Rd. Smithtown, NY 11787. They also may be hand-delivered. Please no electronic submissions.
