This house and its outbuildings offer an unusual glimpse
of Long Island’s agricultural past. The front section
of the house, dating from the early 18th century, has a massive
center chimney with rooms on three sides and a small entryway
on the fourth side.
From this entryway very steep stairs lead to the second floor. Alterations made in the 19th century include the front gable and a northeast corner addition where Franklin O. Arthur practiced dentistry. (He was a blacksmith and self-taught dentist.) A north wing added in the early 20th century considerably enlarged the house yet left the older parts almost fully intact. Notable outbuildings are the barn and the carriage house, both dating from the 19th century. |
