Our Commitment to Education
Responding to the need for a greater understanding of Long Island history, the Smithtown Historical Society has developed outstanding educational programs for elementary school children.
Available to all Long Island schools summer camps, these programs are designed to implement New York State and National Standards for local history instruction. Students learn about the Colonial and Civil War periods though hands-on, immersive activities during our school-year and summer field trips.
Many elementary teachers bring their classes back year after year, allowing the Smithtown Historical Society to host 2,500+ students annually.

All programs run from 10:00 am until 12:30 pm, with time for lunch until 1:00 pm.
Farm Life in Early America
For 3rd - 5th Grade
Learn about Long Island rural life in the 18th and 19th centuries with a visit to our Franklin Arthur Farmhouse.
Hands-on activities include wool carding, spinning, weaving on full-size looms, using and crafting handmade toys each child can take home, and learning about flax growing. Children will also visit our farm animals and explore our 19th century barn and outbuildings.
$15/student | teachers and chaperones free

A Day in the Life of an 18th Century Innkeeper
For 4th - 8th Grade
Visit the Epenetus Smith Tavern, a place of significant Revolutionary War activity, and experience what life was like for 18th century children and Epenetus Smith, a local businessman and patriot.
Hands-on activities include dipping candles, painting a tavern sign, writing a letter with quill and ink, and drawing a silhouette.
