Speaker: Zachary N. Studenroth.
Celebrated for their simple form and association with early American values, historic schoolhouses remain some of Long Island’s most distinctive buildings. Hundreds were built across the region, from early town houses to the octagonal schoolhouses of the 1850s. This lecture explores the development, architecture, changing uses, and preservation of Long Island’s historic schoolhouses, including their connections to early public education and figures such as Walt Whitman.
Zachary N. Studenroth co-authored Historic Schoolhouses of Long Island with historian Kurt E. Kahofer as part of the Images of America series. Both are Long Island residents and historic-preservation professionals with a special interest in the region’s historic schoolhouses.
