Smithtown Historical Society Awarded $108,270 Grant to Restore Historic Homestead

Gardiner Foundation funding will support preservation of the Judge John Lawrence Smith Homestead
The Smithtown Historical Society is proud to announce it has been awarded a $108,270 matching grant from the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation to support the restoration of the Judge John Lawrence Smith Homestead, one of Long Island’s most significant historic properties. Restoration work is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026.
This restoration project will address critical preservation needs at the Homestead, safeguarding its historic integrity while enhancing its ability to serve as an educational and cultural resource for residents, students, and visitors across Long Island.
“We are deeply grateful to the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation for recognizing the importance of this work,” said Priya Kapoor, Executive Director of the Smithtown Historical Society. “This investment allows us to protect our shared history while continuing to serve the public with meaningful, accessible programming.”
The Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation is widely recognized for its leadership in preserving historic sites and strengthening cultural institutions throughout Long Island. The Society will share updates as restoration work progresses.

About the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation
The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, established in 1987, primarily supports the study of New York State history, with an emphasis on Suffolk County. Robert David Lion Gardiner was, until his death in August 2004, the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner's Island. The Gardiner family and their descendants have owned Gardiner's Island since 1639, obtained as part of a royal grant from King Charles I of England. The Foundation's mission is inspired by Robert David Lion Gardiner's lifelong passion for New York history.
